Zombieing is the sequel to ghosting: he vanishes without a word, and then weeks or months later a hey stranger appears in your messages like no time has passed. The comeback works on one mechanism only: your memory of the ghosting has softened, and the little hit of being wanted again feels louder than the silence did.
Why the comeback works
By the time he resurfaces, the sharpest part of the ghosting has faded. What is left is a vague memory of it ending and a very vivid, very current message saying he has been thinking about you. Current always beats vague, which is why so many zombie texts get replies the sender did not earn.
What breaks the spell is specificity. Not remembering that it ended badly, but seeing exactly how: the date of your last entry, the unanswered messages you logged, the score where it stood when he vanished.

What is the difference between zombieing and paperclipping?
Zombieing is a return that acts like the ghosting never happened, often with real re-engagement. Paperclipping is lighter: periodic low-effort pings whose only purpose is keeping you on the hook. Both show up in Spilled as contact tags with no plans behind them.
Can people actually change and come back better?
