What are broken promises?

Broken promises fires when someone repeatedly says they will do things and then does not do them.

Examples that count:

  • He says he will call, never does
  • He says he will plan something, never plans it
  • He says he will text when he gets home, does not
  • He says next week, then next week never comes
  • He talks about future plans (a trip, a dinner, meeting friends) that never materialize

A single broken promise is not a pattern. Everyone forgets a phone call sometimes. Spilled looks for the repeat behavior: multiple stated intentions that do not become actions.

The pattern fires when you have several entries tagged as broken promises, said-but-did-not-do, or follow-through failures.

Why it matters: people show you who they are through their actions, not their words. The words might be sincere in the moment he says them. But over time, what counts is what actually happens, not what was said. Broken promises let you see when the gap between his words and his actions has become too consistent to ignore.
